When All Else Fails- Catching Fish when Fishing Is Tough

with Jason Randall

Did you ever have one of those days when nothing seemed to work, when you've tried everything you can think of and you end up staring into your fly box for the tenth time that day looking for the magic answer? Yeah? Well, truth be told, we all have them. And the answer to catching fish on days like that lies not in a single fly choice or a magic solution but is the sum of a lot of little adjustments that add up to putting fish in the net. Understanding the 'why' of slow days offers insight on 'how' to adapt as anglers. Jason Randall’s power-packed seminar will help you the next time the fishing is tough.

Jason proceeded to not only study and learn fly fishing, achieving great success as thoroughly and quickly as few others have, but he also became adept at communicating the knowledge he gained. For the last twelve years, he has been an outdoor writer with feature articles appearing regularly in American Angler, Fly Fisherman, Eastern Fly Fishing, Northwest Fly Fishing and many other outdoor magazines.

During just the last several months, Jason has appeared and presented programs at fly fishing shows, conclaves and club week-ends throughout North America in places such as Somerset, New Jersey; Denver, Colorado; Detroit, Michigan; Philadelphia, Allenberry and Lancaster, Pennsylvania; Memphis, Tennessee; Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; and in other states as diverse as California, Texas, Ohio, Oklahoma, Nebraska, North Carolina, Arkansas and Illinois.

In 2012, Stackpole/Headwater books released Jason’s first book, Moving Water: A Fly Fisher’s Guide to Currents. This book studies and explains the effect of current on trout, their prey species and presentation, where vertical layers of current create drag and requires adjustments to improve nymph fishing success.

Jason’s second book Feeding Time: A Fly Fisher’s Guide to What, Where and When Trout Eat, was released in August of 2013. This valuable book focuses on matching your fishing strategies to the trout’s feeding strategies, especially when targeting large trout.

And in 2014, the third book in his publisher’s “Fly Fisher’s Guide” trilogy was released -- Trout Sense: A Fly Fisher’s Guide to What Trout See, Hear and Smell, which offers anglers an opportunity to know more about the quarry they seek.

Jason’s forth book was released from Stackpole/ Headwaters Books. Titled ‘Nymph Masters; Fly Fishing Secrets from Expert Anglers’, this book explores the depths of nymph fishing and advanced nymph fishing techniques.

In 2017, Jason joined Luminaries Bob Clouser, Ed Jaworowski, the late Lefty Kreh and many others on the TFO National Advisory Team. Jason appears and presents at shows, clubs and events throughout the North America. For more information: visit www.jrflyfishing.com

Advanced Float Fishing Strategies

with Tony Reinhardt

Float fishing is one of the most productive and enjoyable ways to fly fish. Floating down a lovely river with an expert guide on the oars is an exciting experience that demonstrates how beautiful and fun our sport can be. A trip to the Rocky Mountain West is on many anglers’ agenda each season to float some of the country’s most famous streams. But there are procedures to follow when you are floating, no matter whether you are in the front, middle or back of the boat. It is a team sport with the goal of catching trout. Rower and anglers execute a delicate choreography that produces fish, not tangled lines and frustration.

Tony’s presentation focuses on advanced float fishing strategies and is designed to offer insights into float fishing that will help both the first timer and the veteran angler be more efficient and relaxed when fishing from a drift boat. The differences between float fishing and wade fishing will be highlighted, along with the roles of each angler in different float fishing situations. All the key aspects of a successful float fishing trip will be covered, from casting angles, line management, hooking and fighting fish and teamwork. Advanced tips will also be covered to help anglers take their float fishing to the next level.

Tony Reinhardt, our guide on this trip is one of the best in the country and a favorite of the Club circuit. Tony was born and raised in Council Bluffs, Iowa where his father taught him to hunt and fish on the family farm. While still a teenager, Tony was looking for different ways to catch the bass and pan fish throughout the Midwest, so he picked up a fly rod and has never been the same. He got his first taste of trout fishing while attending college in Oklahoma and driving on weekends to the productive tailwaters in Arkansas -- the White, the Little Red and the Norfolk. After his freshman year of college he spent that summer fishing and traveling with his grandfather in Alaska. They had an Airstream camper and a canoe, spending most days exploring as many fishing opportunities as they could. It was a life changing experience, and Tony quickly traded a full ride scholarship back in Oklahoma for tuition bills and a tiny apartment in Missoula, MT.

Tony started working at Missoula’s Grizzly Hackle Fly Shop in ’97 while earning a degree in English from the University of Montana. He was hired as a “shop rat” and by the following summer he was promoted to Outfitting Manager and started his guiding career as well. He split time between both positions for a few years until a once in a lifetime opportunity came along.

In 2001, a guest ranch was being developed in southwest Montana, and Tony was hired as a staff guide for the initial year. When not guiding for the ranch, his mandate was to go fishing and learn as much as possible about all the rivers of Montana. Since he only guided six days for that whole season, he had a lot of time to explore the state. Being paid to just go fishing was an unbelievable experience, but at the end of that year, Tony chose to return to Missoula. While he had witnessed some great fishing all across Big Sky Country, he felt that the rivers around Missoula offered the best overall angling experience in the state, and

Tony rejoined the Grizzly Hackle as a full time guide in 2002.

Since then he has spent as much time on the rivers of western Montana as any other guide in the area, averaging more than 150 guide days a season. Tony started his own outfitting business, Montana Trout Outfitters, in 2010 and his guide season is nearly filled each year with returning anglers. During a rare day off you are likely to find him exploring some of the lesser known waters in the area or testing new fly designs for his clients to use in the coming days. Tony also serves as a Travel Advisor for Wild on the Fly Fishing Adventure Travel and has hosted trips to locations across the globe.

Fly tying started as a passion for Tony when he moved to Missoula and he has become a skilled tier who is often asked to demonstrate at local events. He tied flies commercially for area fly shops and most flies in his guide bag were created You can learn more about Tony and Montana Trout Outfitters by going to: www.mttroutguides.com

Landon Mayer

Mastering The Short Game

One of the top guides in the Western United States, Colorado guide Landon Mayer makes a welcome return to the SoCal speaker circuit. His new video-enhanced program will show that the best fish are often closer than you think. Most anglers wade into the fish they are trying to catch, or assume they are on the far side of the river. As the program will show, trophy fish are often less than a rod’s length away. Observation and a stealthy approach are often the key to a successful day.

Landon Mayer’s angling success is fueled by an addiction to pursuing large trout with small flies and lightweight fly-fishing equipment. Mayer enthusiastically teaches and demonstrates his techniques and on-river knowledge and has developed innovative strategies for sighting, hooking, and landing selective trout. He shares these tips and secrets in his books and DVD’s. Landon’s passion for fly-fishing has allowed him to make several noteworthy contributions to the sport on and off the water. This has included travels to fly-fishing related organizations of the Mid-Atlantic, West, Pacific Northwest, Southwest, and Southern states, as well as teaching through guided trips, fly-fishing classes, presentations, and demonstrations of his unique techniques. Mayer has been guiding in Colorado full time on the South Platte River for the last 22 years, and one full season on the Nak Nek River in AK. He resides with his wife, Michelle, and their four children in Florissant, Colorado.
