Many of us forget how big a state California really is. And because most of us have limited time for fly fishing, the urge to explore is defeated by the promise of a sure thing and the comfort of familiarity. Thus, once we’re introduced to the Eastern Sierra waters, including Hot Creek, the Owens, and the East Walker, that’s where many of us head for our fly fishing vacations. Some of us have gotten a little more adventuresome, especially after recent PCC programs, and may now include the Western and Southern Sierra as fishing destinations (living life on the edge, as it were).

The logical next step of my brilliant introductory paragraph is that a compass has four points, so why haven’t we heard about fishing in the Northern Sierra? Is it taboo territory, or the fishing equivalent of the Bermuda Triangle?

To dispel any lingering fears or ignorance, this month our program focuses on some great trout water in the Northern Sierra. Our speaker, Jon Baiocchi, will be looking at Plumas and Sierra Counties, which include the pristine watershed of the North Fork of the Yuba River, the designated “Wild and Scenic” Middle Fork of the Feather River, and the amazing Lake Davis.

Jon Baiocchi is a fishing guide, published author, and innovative fly tier. A native of California, Jon has been fly fishing and fly tying since 1972. Jon’s father, Bob Baiocchi, was inducted into the FFF Hall of Fame in 1999, and obviously was a major influence on his son. Prior to his fly fishing career, Jon was a professional snowboarder in Colorado, competing at the national level and starring in feature films. Although Jon grew up in Paradise (around Chico), he is now based out of Nevada City, and guides, lectures, and teaches year-around. You can learn more about Jon by going to www.baiocchistroutfitters.com.

Jon will address fly fis
hing in these two counties, including the access points, the entomology, and how to fish the area during all four seasons. He’ll share insider tips and current information, such as the origin of the spectacular Hexagenia mayfly hatch at Lake Davis that magically appeared two years ago. The biomass of this lake makes it one of the healthiest and most productive fisheries in our state.

Catching Jon Baiocchi’s show this Thursday evening, February 12th, at 7:30 p.m., will give you some hard information on some great rivers to consider fishing this coming year. Please join us at the San Marino Masonic Lodge,3130 Huntington Drive, San Marino, 91108.
