If you want to get into some serious trout fishing and new water a little closer than the 300 mile trek to Hot Creek and the Upper Owens, you might consider what some PCC anglers in the know have been doing for a few years now: check out the Kern River in the southern Sierra. More than just a single stretch, you have a choice of miles of different streams and types of water to fish, including such wonderful places as the Upper Kern River, the Hole in the Ground, Grasshopper Flat, the Little Kern River, Lake Isabella, and the Greenhorn Mountain Range. There are three native trout you can find only in the southern Sierra: the Golden Trout (our state fish), the Kern River Rainbow, and the Little Kern Golden Trout. If you want to learn about fly fishing this area, this month we’re bringing you THE expert to tell you everything you need to know.
Guy Jeans is a local boy made good. Originally from Ventura, he enjoyed surfing, fishing, and music. In fact, for over 15 years Guy made his living composing and performing music in a popular band. As Guy traveled with his band, he discovered many rivers and streams that spiked his already strong passion for fly fishing. He fell hopelessly in love with the Kern River and the other waters of the southern Sierra, started a guide service there, and opened the Kern River Fly Shop in 2002. In 2004, Guy started the Southern Sierra Fly Fishers Club in Kernville. In 2014, the club received the McKenzie Cup from the IFFF for their conservation work on the Kern River Rainbow, as well as their popular Kids Fly Fishing Academy held every spring. Unable to fully kick the rock music bug, Guy still performs today with his newly formed band, the Stoneflys (sic).
Guy has been fishing the Kern River area for more than 30 years and guides at least 200 days a year all over the southern Sierra, Sequoia National Forest, and the Golden Trout Wilderness. Guy is the host of two DVDs: “Sierra Fly Fishing Volume 1, The Lower Kern River” and “Volume 2, The Kern River in the Golden Trout Wilderness.” He writes fly fishing articles for magazines and newspapers including Southwest Fly Fishing magazine. He is a contract fly designer for Solitude Fly Company and his Kern Emerger series is sold and fished internationally. Guy is on the pro staff for Redington Fly Rods and Hatch Reels, as well as being a Simms Guide Ambassador. You can learn more about Guy and the Kern River at his website at www.kernriverflyfishing.com.
Guy’s last presentation to PCC was a multimedia experience with music and beautiful photography, so we’re looking forward to see this entirely new program. His topics will include local entomology as well as the best fly fishing techniques and strategies for success on these lovely waters. The Kern River is a long river covering a lot of different terrain, and offers many different fly fishing experiences. We will examine all the different stretches of the Kern and how best to fish them..
If you’re yearning to try some new locations for trout and don’t want to waste too much time figuring it out yourself, you’ll want to come to the San Marino Masonic Lodge, 3130 Huntington Drive, San Marino, 91108, this Thursday evening, January 8th, at 7:30 p.m.
