We have a tradition of kicking off each year’s program schedule with recognized fly fishing experts, and this year is no different. We’re happy to be welcoming back the well-known author and guide Landon Mayer this month.
With 20 years of experience as a guide, Landon has kept careful notes of the tips and tricks which can successfully change your merely routine fishing days into memorable ones. These techniques range from breaking simple rules of casting to special guide fly patterns which can get the trout eating. We can look forward to hearing some of the unorthodox tricks which a top guide uses to keep his clients (and himself) hooking and landing superior fish.
Landon was born and raised in Colorado Springs. He began his fly fishing career in the 6th grade when his middle school offered fly casting lessons. As a teenager, Landon spent his free time hanging out in local fly shops and watching VHS tapes by Gary Borger and Doug Swisher until the tapes actually wore out!
After high school, Landon became a full time guide in Colorado, learning from great Colorado anglers such as Ed Engle, Pat Dorsey, and fly tyer John Barr. At the same time, Landon began publishing articles in magazines High Country Angler, American Angler, Fly Rod & Reel, and Fly Fisherman.
In 2007, Landon’s first book, How to Catch the Biggest Trout of Your Life, was followed by his first DVD, Landing the Trout of Your Life. 2008 saw the release of his second DVD, Weapons of Bass Production. With his own guide service going full tilt, Landon stayed in the spotlight with his books Sight Fishing for Trout (2010) and Colorado’s Best Fly Fishing (2011). His fourth book, 101 Trout Tips: A Guide’s Secrets, Tactics, and Techniques, was released in 2015.
Landon is a member of the advisory teams for Simms, Ross Reels, Scientific Anglers, Smith Optics, Fishpond, Yeti coolers, and Casio Pro Trek watches. Landon is also a royalty fly designer for Umpqua Feather Merchants. Together with his wife Michelle (who shares his passion for the sport) and their four children, Landon lives near his home waters of the South Platte River in Colorado where he teaches fly fishing through guiding, classes, and by giving presentations throughout the country. You can learn more about Landon at his website: www.landonmayer.com.
